Projects Completed
The memorial society works countless hours year round to help preserve and beautify the Wright City Cemetery. Here are just a few of the many projects completed.
Ober Stone
Small Title
In 2019, a marble gravestone for Frankie and Fannie Ober was accidentally shattered by an unknown person. The Memorial Society is happy to announce, a replacement gravestone now marks the gravesite again, of the 7-year-old twin brother and sister who died 25 days apart in 1883.
The original stone featured silhouettes of a young boy and girl, and those silhouettes have been replicated on the new granite stone. The stone was carved by, and purchased from Missouri Monument company and it was set in the original base by members of the Memorial Society.
The location of the gravestone is in block 1.
The Memorial Society thanks all persons who donated to help pay for this gravestone.
Block 8 Restoration
Small Title
August 8, 2020 members of the Society began the project of restoring Block 8. Brush was cleared that was encroaching onto cemetery grounds. The clearing of the brush and killing of weeds now allows for better viewing of the dogwood trees in the area and the big oak trees.
Topsoil was used to fill in and leveled where erosion had washed away the ground.
Volunteers spent many hours helping to prep the area by raking and picking up rocks and scattering straw over the entire block so that grass seed could be sown. After the grass started to take hold, fertilizer was added. The entire block was hand raked of leaves in the fall. Project was completed in November 2020. The following year all of Block 8 was pushed mown to protect the new grass from possible damage.
Memorial Society is grateful for all the volunteer hours it took to beautify this part of the cemetery.
Block 1 Improvement
Small Title
The cleanup of trees and brush at Block 1 made a big difference in to all who first enter the cemetery..
Hayes Stone Placed
Small Title
In 1857 when Dr. Henry Wright was planning a new town on a section of the land he owned in Hickory Grove Township, he turned to a young surveyor from Pennsylvania for help. John Vincent Hayes surveyed and laid out the new town of Wright City 165 years ago and went on to become an attorney, a businessman and public official.
Potter's Field
After 3 years, the Potter's Field project is finally completed. Thankfully the society received donations from the community at our First Friday booth and a special thank you to Rachel and Ramiz Hakim for donating the cost of the printed red bricks which make up the cross in the memorial.
Jake Boyd of Boyd Walls, and Will Adcock of Mathews Concrete helped to bring the Society’s idea to reality. Third time was charm as the saying goes as Jake was the third contractor the Memorial Society had contracted to work with and he was able to get the job done for us. Now all who are buried in Potter's Field has a marker with their name on it so all who visit will know of them.
